Assuming tr is available on the system,

Convert the given argument into an all lower case string.

toLower() {
 echo $1 | tr "[:upper:]" "[:lower:]" 
} 

Convert the given argument into an all lower case string.

toUpper() {
 echo $1 | tr "[:lower:]" "[:upper:]"
